Comprehensive Eye Care

Taking care of your eyes should be a priority at every stage of life. At Somerset Ophthalmology, we understand that eye care needs vary significantly from infancy through the golden years. That’s why we’re proud to offer comprehensive eye care services for both adults and children, ensuring your entire family receives the personalized attention and expert care they deserve.

Why Regular Eye Exams Matter

Many people only think about visiting an eye doctor when they notice problems with their vision, but regular eye exams are essential for maintaining healthy eyes and catching potential issues early. Eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy often develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages. By the time you notice changes in your vision, significant damage may have already occurred.

During a comprehensive eye exam, our experienced ophthalmologists will examine the entire health of your eyes. They will look for signs of eye diseases, evaluate how well your eyes work together, and assess your risk factors for developing vision problems in the future. This allows us to detect and treat conditions before they impact your daily life.

What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough evaluation of your vision and overall eye health that’s tailored to your age and individual needs.

Medical History and Vision Assessment

Your eye doctor will begin every exam by discussing your medical history, current medications, and any vision concerns you may have. This conversation helps us understand your individual risk factors and tailor the examination to your specific needs. We’ll also review your family’s eye health history, as many eye conditions have genetic components.

Vision Testing and Eye Function

During the examination, we test your visual acuity at various distances using eye charts appropriate for your age. We measure how well your eyes work together, check your peripheral vision, and assess your color vision.

Eye Health Evaluation

We examine both the front and back of your eyes using specialized instruments and techniques. This includes measuring your eye pressure to screen for glaucoma and carefully examining your cornea, lens, and retina.

We often use dilating drops to get a comprehensive view of your retina and optic nerve, which allows us to detect problems that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Age-Appropriate Care for Children

For children, we adapt our approach based on their age and development level. Infants and toddlers receive specialized testing that doesn’t require verbal responses, while preschoolers might play vision games or identify pictures instead of letters.

Older children can participate in standard vision tests similar to adults. We always explain procedures in age-appropriate language to help children feel comfortable and engaged throughout their visit.

Adult Eye Care

Your vision needs evolve throughout your lifetime, and we’re here to support you at every stage.

In your twenties and thirties, you might be experiencing vision changes for the first time or dealing with eye strain from increased screen time. This is an excellent time to establish good eye care habits and explore vision correction options like glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery such as LASIK.

As you enter your forties, you’ll likely notice presbyopia developing, making it harder to focus on close objects. This natural change affects nearly everyone and is easily corrected with reading glasses, bifocals, or progressive lenses. Your risk for eye diseases also begins to increase during this decade, making regular comprehensive exams more important than ever.

Adults over sixty face the greatest risk for sight-threatening conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. However, with early detection and proper treatment, most of these conditions can be successfully managed.

We work closely with your other healthcare providers to monitor how conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure may affect your vision, ensuring comprehensive care that protects your sight and overall health.

Pediatric Eye Care

Your child’s vision develops rapidly during the first few years of life, making early eye care crucial for proper visual and overall development. Many vision problems in children go undetected because kids don’t realize their vision isn’t normal. Instead, they simply adapt to what they can see.

We specialize in detecting and treating childhood vision conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye misalignment), and refractive errors. These conditions respond best to early treatment, but can cause permanent vision problems if left unaddressed past critical development periods. Our pediatric specialists use child-friendly equipment and techniques designed specifically for young patients.

Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam between ages 3 and 5, before starting school. However, don’t wait if you notice warning signs like frequent eye rubbing, squinting, covering one eye, sitting very close to screens, avoiding reading or coloring activities, or complaints of headaches.

Early intervention can prevent learning difficulties and ensure your child has the visual skills needed for academic and social success.

How to Prepare for Your Routine Eye Exam

What to Bring

Come prepared with your current glasses or contact lenses, a list of medications you’re taking, and information about any family history of eye disease. If you have insurance, bring your card and any referral forms your primary care doctor may have provided.

Special Considerations for Dilation

If we need to use dilating drops during your exam, your pupils will remain enlarged for 2-4 hours, causing blurry near vision and light sensitivity. Consider bringing sunglasses and arranging alternative transportation, especially if this is your first dilated exam.

Preparing Children for Success

Eye exams can be nerve-racking for children, especially when they haven’t been before. To prepare them, it’s important to explain that the eye doctor will use special lights and instruments to examine their eyes, but to emphasize that nothing will hurt. Bringing a comfort item can help younger children feel secure during their visit.
